The Three Kinematic Equations

Three equations relate the variables in motion when acceleration is constant.

Three stacked panels, each showing one kinematic equation in action. Top: a car accelerating from v_i to v_f over time t (v_f = v_i + at). Middle: a car starting from rest and covering displacement Δx over time t (Δx = v_i·t + ½at²). Bottom: a car braking from v_i over displacement Δx with no clock visible (v_f² = v_i² + 2aΔx).

You pick the right equation for a problem by knowing which variables each equation contains.
